American Fairy Tales L Frank Baum 9781466496576 Books

You really can't go wrong with L Frank Baum. If you are familiar with only the Wizard of Oz, and that only by the movie, I urge you to get this spectacularly low priced omnibus and dig right in. Baum had a fantastical imagination and ranks with Lord Dunsany, or with Blackwood or Lovecraft but always in his own, child friendly way. You won't be disappointed. My mother was a children's librarian but when she was a child on a dusty farm in Nevada, she read every book by Captain Baum that she could get her hands on. Every journey begins with a single step. Persevere.

American Fairy Tales L Frank Baum 9781466496576 Books Reviews

Baum is at his usual quirky self in these fantastic short stories.

A lot of people will almost certainly take offence at the final story which involves some stereotypes of the villain who is Chinese, but he is a villain and the other Chinese in the story are not portrayed the same way.
There is also some offensive stereotyping in the Laughing Hippopotamus, the story of a fun loving young hippo hunted by an African bully.

These are not Baum's best stories by any means and though there are some fun moments to be had, it's definitely not in my favorites when it comes to his fairy tales.

This is NOT the complete edition and is missing three stories and all of the illustrations.
The twelve stories included are

"The Box of Robbers."
"The Glass Dog."
"The Queen of Quok."
"The Girl Who Owned a Bear."
"The Enchanted Types."
"The Laughing Hippopotamus."
"The Magic Bon Bons."
"The Capture of Father Time."
"The Wonderful Pump."
"The Dummy That Lived."
"The King of the Polar Bears."
"The Mandarin and the Butterfly.".

The missing stories which were added in a later edition are
"The Strange Adventures of an Egg."
"The Ryl."
"The Witchcraft of Mary-Marie."
I have been reading these stories to my daughter and have enjoyed them... but they are a product of the era during which they were written and, as such, have some overtly racist language. I edited on the fly while reading to my daughter and substituted less offensive words as appropriate.
I thought it would be neat to read them, since written by the author of the Wizard of Oz. They are ok, nothing objectionable but nothing especially interesting either. I read them to myself with the thought of reading them later to my boys -- but can't see them finding them interesting. Almost all of them ended with a line about the moral you were supposed to get from the story -- they didn't seem to fit and hitting someone on the head with that is kind of off-putting.
Twelve wonderful, funny stories. Many with a closing comment by the author. Twists & Turns with predictability in some cases, but overall entertaining. Whether stories feature adults, animals, birds, insects, or children, there are strong female & male characters illustrated as well as some with flaws, but that's what makes them entertaining and fun to read. Lessons can be taught to children as they are read the stories by an adult (& questioned for understanding).
American Fairy Tales is a 1901 collection of twelve fantasy stories by L. Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

These stories feature good humor, and are often tongue-in-cheek. While perfectly appropriate for children, they were clearly written with adults in mind, and can be enjoyed by such. Highlights here include "The Glass Dog" and "The Queen of Quok."

They aren't all classics, but everything is short and moves briskly. There is also some mild racism in a couple of places, but nothing worth starting a bonfire over.

Overall, American Fairy Tales is a charming, clever, entertaining work.
I'm an Oz fan so reading L Frank Baum's earlier works that I've never knew about is a great pleasure for me. The stories have time-less morals woven into them so they are great for younger children too.
This is a delightful book of whimsy-filled tales that Baum wrote shortly after his best known work THE WIZARD OF OZ.

The stories are a delight. They are filled with morals, but never fail to entertain.

Some mix the whimsy with touching elements, such as "The Dummy That Lived" (about a mannequin that comes to life) and "The Wonderful Pump", about a poor family whose pump produces gold. A few are outright farce, such as "The Box of Robbers" (about a girl who finds a trunk with three Italian bandits similar to Aladdin's Lamp) and "The Magic Bon Bons," a story that still amuses over a century later. Interestingly, in spite of the book's title, "The Laughung Hippopotamus" and "The Mandarin and the Butterfly" take place in Africa and China, respectively.

Great to read for the kiddles or by yourself on your porch or in front of a fireplace in a rocking chair.
